Our Ultimate Manduria wine tour showcases some of the best wine and food in Puglia.
The tour begins with a visit to a family-run based around an historic Masseria (fortified farmhouse) that played a crucial strategic role in the defence of the local area in the late medieval period. One of the highlights of the property is its small private chapel (originally built for the workers on the estate) which features some remarkable frescoes from the sixteenth century. The estate was purchased around the turn of the century and since then the new owners have replanted the vineyards (primarily with local grape varieties), renovated the masseria and installed a new production facility. Over a platter of local specialities, you will have the opportunity to taste some of the estate’s best wines.
Our second stop is at another beautifully restored Masseria, which is now the hospitality centre for one of our favourite winemakers in the region. Here you will be guided around the small Information Centre which provides an overview of the wine making process – from the maintenance of the vines through to final bottling stage. Weather permitting we will also have a quick visit into the vineyards to view some of the different training systems that are used. This is followed by a visit to the Barrel Room where the wines mature under perfect storage conditions enhanced by classical music played to help the wine relax! We then retire to the Tasting Room where you will have a guided tasting of a variety of the vineyards excellent wines – including (subject to availability) their flagship wine which was rated as one of the Top 100 Wines in the World by Wine Spectator magazine in 2014 and 2015.
Our tour continues down to the nearby coast where we will have a lunch of freshly prepared seafood antipasta (vegetarian / non-seafood alternatives are available) at one of the best seaside restaurants overlooking the Ionian Sea. The Head Chef was recently recognised as the region’s top Emerging Chef at the Puglia Restaurant Awards.
We conclude our journey with a visit to the home of the Primitivo di Manduria grape variety. We begin with a guided tour around the superb Museum of Wine and Rural Life housed underground in the original wine cellars of the city’s co-operative. This is followed by a Wine Tasting centred around the Primitivo grape that will provide an excellent overview of how the age of the vines, quality of the grapes and wine making processes influence the structure, aroma and taste of the wine.
This is an exceptional day out, tasting some of the very best food and wine that this region has to offer.
