Our Salice Salentino wine tour is based around wineries in and around the Salice Salentino wine region to the north-west of Lecce.
Our tour begins with a visit to a one of the oldest wine estates in the region. The winery is based around an amazing castle (dating from around 1500 and originally built as a monastery) which is now one of the premier wedding venues in the area. Our visit is based in the winery’s old production building, which now houses their small museum dedicated to wine making in Puglia and the tasting room. Here our host will provide a brief overview of how the Puglian wine industry has changed over the last couple of generations and the history of the estate. He will then guide you through a tasting of some of their premium brand wines and explain some of the stories behind their names.
Our second stop, near the town of Cellino San Marco, is to a vineyard based around a Masseria (fortified farmhouse) which was originally built as a model winery for Southern Italy. The current owners have completely restored the old buildings and have replanted the vineyards with a focus on local grape varieties (including negroamaro, primitivo, susumaniello, aleatico, malvasia nera, fiano and verdeco). The visit includes a tour of the winery and the vineyard (where many of the vines are grown in an ancient septunx layout – based on an old Roman Army battle formation). This is followed by a tasting of some of the estate’s wined in their impressive Tasting Room overlooking the main Barrel Room.
Our tour concludes at one of the region’s newest wineries, which was only established in 2014. This is a great example of an old family run business where the next generation have proposed and adopted a new approach to wine making. Here the brothers will explain their vision for the business over a glass (or two) of their delicious wine. We then retire to the tasting room where you will be treated to a tasting of some of their award winning wine over lunch lovingly prepared by “mamma”. The menu is a celebration of Puglian cuisine – based around fresh, seasonal produce which is entirely home grown (including the grain for the bread / pasta and the olive oil).
