Our Historic Manduria wine tour visits some of the most historic wine buildings in and around the Manduria wine region.
The tour begins with a visit to a family-run based around an historic Masseria (fortified farmhouse) that played a crucial strategic role in the defence of the local area in the late medieval period. One of the highlights of the property is its small private chapel (originally built for the workers on the estate) which features some remarkable frescoes from the sixteenth century. The estate was purchased around the turn of the century and since then the new owners have replanted the vineyards (primarily with local grape varieties), renovated the masseria and installed a new production facility. Over a platter of local specialities, you will have the opportunity to taste some of the estate’s best wines.
Our second stop is a visit to a one of the oldest wine estates in the region. The winery is based around an amazing castle (dating from around 1500 and originally built as a monastery) which is now one of the premier wedding venues in the area. Our visit is based in the winery’s old production building, which now houses their small museum dedicated to wine making in Puglia and the tasting room. Here our host will provide a brief overview of how the Puglian wine industry has changed over the last couple of generations and the history of the estate. He will then guide you through a tasting of some of their premium brand wines and explain some of the stories behind their names.
We continue on to the nearby town of Guagnano, where we will visit a local trattoria for a typical Pugliese antipasti lunch comprising a wide selection of vegetable, meat, cheese and seafood dishes.
We conclude our journey with a visit to the home of the Primitivo di Manduria grape variety. We begin with a guided tour around the superb Museum of Wine and Rural Life housed underground in the original wine cellars of the city’s co-operative. This is followed by a Wine Tasting centred around the Primitivo grape that will provide an excellent overview of how the age of the vines, quality of the grapes and wine making processes influence the structure, aroma and taste of the wine.
This is one of our most popular tours and provides a real insight into wine making in this region.
